Having found the bedrooms at the Merton Hotel to be of a very good standard, we had an excellent breakfast. At 9.30 am we got on to a coach for a trip around the island. We were very fortunate as the weather was glorious all day. We travelled clockwise, generally hugging the coast as much as possible. Our first stop was for a photoshoot at Corbiere Phare at the south-west tip. The second stop was at Jersey Pearl (about three-quarters up the west coast) where most people thought about buying some pearls (though few people actually did so) and some just had a tea-break. After a short trip via Grosnez Point, we stopped for a lunchbreak at Greve De Lecq (a little bit in on the north coast). After lunch we were driven along the rest of the north coast (past places such as Bonne Nuite Bay) from where we could see the Normandy-Brittany coast quite clearly. At about 2pm we stopped for an 'ice cream break' at St. Catherine's Breakwater (coming down the East coast). Our final stop was at Gorey, for a short photoshoot looking across at Mont Orgueil Castle. The traffic was generally light so we made it back to the hotel at about 3.30pm, a little earlier than had been expected. Well-earned thanks were given to Mark, our driver and guide who had given us an interesting chat about the island as we went along. We were pleased to have time to relax (a few went swimming in the hotel's outdoors pool) before an excellent buffet dinner.

E15M2A The day's 'work' consisted of being given an interesting coach tour around Jersey. The island, which is the largest of the Channel Islands, is (in very rough terms) about 9 miles wide by 5 miles deep.

The island's surface is 'sloped'. The north has cliffs whilst the rest has shallow beaches which are greatly affected by the tides.
E15M2B The main town of Jersey is St. Helier. The island is divided into 12 parishes: Grouville, St. Brelade, St. Clement, St. Helier, St. John, St. Lawrence, St. Martin, St. Mary, St. Ouen, St. Peter, St. Saviour & Trinity. The population in 2014 was just under 100,000.

The experiences of the Channel Islands in the Second World War formed much of the focus for the next day of the trip but the barracks museum provided a reminder that the islands also had a role to play in the Napoleonic Wars.
E15M2F An impressive prize-winning sandcastle at St. Catherine's. It is a permanent feature at the roadside, not on a beach.
